French A Level at Herefordshire & Ludlow College

Course description

This course is designed to encourage you to develop the knowledge and skills acquired at GCSE.

It will give you a useful insight into another culture and enable you to achieve greater fluency, accuracy and confidence in the language as it is spoken and written, as well as improving your communication skills.

Course content

You will learn how to improve your use of French in a variety of situations, understanding how to read texts and other source materials, extract information, initiate conversations and respond to questions both orally and in writing.

You will cover areas such as travel and tourism, sport, hobbies, entertainment, traditions, relationships and healthy living.

You will develop your understanding of social issues in contemporary France such as multiculturalism, poverty, law and order and the impact of scientific and technological progress.

You will have access to a range of authentic materials, such as video clips, CDs, TV adverts and news, interactive websites and online reports and articles related to the topics mentioned above. Every week you will see our native speaker of French, on a one-to-one basis who will be available more often in the run-up to the oral examination.

Entry requirements

A minimum of 5 GCSEs grade A-C, grade B in GCSE French and grade C in English Language.

Future opportunities

French is considered a facilitating subject and is highly regarded by top universities.

Many of our students pursue their studies of French at university level and combine this with Linguistics, Law, IT, Business Studies, European Studies, International Relations Economics, Engineering or another language. They then take up careers in International law, journalism, translationinterpreting, the diplomatic service, customs and excise, to name a few.
