Computer Science AS Level at Nelson Thomlinson School

Course description

Course Content

• Programming using VB.Net.

• Data Representation (binary, hexadecimal, images, sound, asci).

• Problem solving (understanding and designing algorithms).

• Understanding software and hardware.

• Machine architecture (processor and memory).

 • Internet theory and web page design.

 

Entry requirements

At least a Grade B in GCSE Mathematics.

Student Attributes

  • Motivated, independent worker.
  • Logical thought processes.
  • Good analytical skills and an ability to break down problems into smaller components.
  • Prepared to allocate time outside lessons to practising and experimenting with computer programming skills.

Assessment

Paper 1: 50% of AS; 1 hour 30 minutes; on screen exam, short answer questions, plus a programming challenge based in previously analysed skeleton code.

Paper 2: 50% of AS; 1 hour 30 minutes; written short and extended answer questions.

Future opportunities

Computer Science can lead directly into the computing industry, developing websites, making games or writing applications for industry as well as working in network or database administration. Skills can be applied across science subjects to aid in collecting and analysing data. Computer Science is useful in preparing students for courses in Science and Engineering.
