Creative Employment Programme Level 1 at Colchester Institute

Course description

The Creative Employment Programme is a 12 week College-based programme, aimed at 16-18 year olds currently not in employment, education or training. The course provides a great opportunity to gain pre-employment training in the creative and cultural industries and is supplemented by a quality work shadowing experience.

Underpinned by relevant accredited level 1 qualifications the course has been developed in collaboration with the Royal Opera House Bridge and local arts organisations including firstsite, The Mercury Theatre, Colchester Arts Centre and The Minories.

Students will receive effective guidance on progression from traineeship into a job/further training, group and one-to-one mentoring support to improve their communication skills and will achieve a recognised entry-level qualification alongside the Arts Award.

Course content

The Arts Award consists of the following units;

  • Enjoying The Arts
  • Take Part in an Arts Activity
  • Go to an Arts Event
  • Artist Research
  • Arts Skill Share

In addition to the Arts Award, the programme also offers:

  • Positive engagement activity connecting to the arts
  • Work experience in the creative and cultural industries
  • Confidence, self-esteem and development of work readiness
  • Functional Skills qualifications, where not already achieved
  • Employability skills such as CV writing and interview techniques through an accredited Level 1 qualification

Future opportunities

There are a wide range of possible careers within the creative arts industries, from work within film, television or theatre production, advertising, publishing and web design, lighting or sound operation, venue management, equipment hire, retail and marketing, as well as jobs such as Stage Manager or Set Designer, Costumer Designer or Maker, Prop Designer or Maker, to Freelance Photographer.

On successful completion of the course you are eligible to apply to Level 1 or 2 courses in Music, Performing Arts, Creative Art, Art and Design, and Creative Media Production.
