Chemistry for Life : is about the elements which make up our universe. What patterns can we find in the elements and where do they come from? How are they built into the molecules of life? This unit also focuses on the fuels we use. How we get the energy we need from fuels and what makes a fuel useful. It also tackles some of the environmental issues surrounding the problems of exhaust emissions.

The Chemistry of Natural Resources : allows students to examine the ways in which we use the chemicals around us. How do we obtain minerals from the ground and from the sea? What chemicals do we find in the atmosphere and what environmental issues does this relate to. This unit also investigates the development of polymers and looks at some with rather unusual properties. Assessment of this unit will include a question on an ‘Advance Notice’ article which candidates will have received at least four weeks before the examination date.

Chemistry in Practice : is the assessed practical component of the AS course. Candidates are assessed in five skill areas; Competence, Measurement, Analysis and Evaluation, Observation and Interpretation. These will be internally assessed through the use of practical tasks, and externally moderated by OCR.

The Chemistry of Natural Products : starts with a section on medicines, beginning with the extraction of medicines from natural materials such as tree bark, and ending with an examination of how we develop and test new medicines today. This unit also further develops the theme of polymers, looking at some of the most up-to-date polymers and their uses. Turning to a more biological theme the unit looks at protein structure, genetic engineering and enzymes, before returning to study the importance of iron and steel.

Chemistry by Design begins by looking at Chemistry in agriculture and its contribution to maintaining a safe and efficient food supply. The essential place of chemistry in the world of colour, art and dyeing is then followed by an evaluation of chemical processes in relation to our oceans. The subject of medicines is returned to in the final part of this unit, with reference to our control of disease and the action of drugs. During this unit a study is made of the important issues surrounding Chemistry in Industry.

The Individual Investigation consists of a project carried out in the laboratory. Candidates are expected to spend about 18 hours of laboratory time carrying out practical work The topic selected by each student will reflect their own particular area of interest within the course as a whole. Eight skill areas are assessed; Chemical Ideas, Methods, Communication, Observations and Measurements, Analysis and Interpretation, Evaluation, Manipulation and Demand.

Entry requirements

Grade B in both Core and Additional Science, or a grade B in Chemistry and one other separate science is required, along with a B in Maths.
