Engineering BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma at Barnet and Southgate College

Course description

This course is ideal for you if you have a keen interest in pursuing a career in engineering and are excited by the prospect of working in such areas as robotics, product design, automotive technology, aerospace technology, the nuclear industry or in telecommunications. The BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Engineering will give you the experience and recognised qualifications you will need for any of these careers.

Course content

The course covers topics such as: materials, mechanical and electrical principles, mathematics, Computer Aided Design (CAD), electronics, engineering science, fluid mechanics. Maths, english and ICT are also integral parts of this course. You will also study AS/A level Mathematics or core mathematics and the Extended Project qualification alongside your BTEC Extended Diploma.

Entry requirements

You will need five GCSEs at grade A*-C including at least a grade B in Maths and grade C in English or a BTEC Subsidiary Diploma in Engineering. A satisfactory interview demonstrating an interest in and aptitude for the subject is also required.


You will be assessed through a combination of practical task completed in laboratories, reports, presentations and coursework assignments. This qualification will appeal to students who prefer portfolio based assessment covering a variety of engineering investigations.

Financial information

Whilst every attempt is made to keep the costs to the candidate to a minimum, the college reserves the right to charge candidates amounts over and above published fees in response to any additional charges from the awarding body. You will need to purchase the department uniform and course books. You will also need to pay for some trips and visits.

Future opportunities

This three A-Level equivalent programme will provide you with a qualification to progress onto an engineering degree or a Higher National Certificate or Diploma at college or university. Others may choose to move directly into employment in the engineering sector in fields such as: Chemical, Defence, Electrical, Marine or Mechanical Engineering.
