Design and Technology Product Design A Level at Cromwell Community College
'A Level D&T;: Product Design' offers learners the opportunity to study, design and make exciting prototype designs closely linked to the real world of product manufacture. It enables you to utilise all the latest equipment, technology and machinery to manufacture products that you have had complete freedom to deesign - you are very much in control of all aspects of the design - creativity is key.
Over the two years of the course there are two components of study. They are:
Component 1: Principles of Design and Technology
This involves learning about a range of design issues from materials and processes to the effects of technological development and health and safety issues. Your knowledge is tested by a 2½ hour written exam which is worth 50% of your final grade.
Component 2: Independent Design and Make Project
The requirement here is to produce a substantial design portfolio and sophisticated and creative final prototype product. You will need to identify your own starting point, carry out research, produce ideas which are developed and modelled, plan and skilfully manufacture a product and evaluate it and explain potential improvements
You will study and work with a variety of materials and components to complete several ‘design and make’ mini-projects. Alongside these, most of the knowledge content will be taught.
You will complete learning the last units of knowledge in readiness for the final exam as well as undertaking the major project.
Grade 5 or above in GCSE Graphic Products or Resistant Materials.
It is a good starting point for students who may wish to study architecture, graphic design, industrial product design, three-dimensional design, furniture design, fashion or jewellery in the future.
