Animal Care Level 1 Diploma (NPTC) at Highbury College

Course description

You will learn about animal management, including animal health checks from deer to harvest mice, how to create suitable enclosures and maintaining a working farm environment.

This is a full-time, one year programme that will be delivered at Staunton Country Park, Havant and Highbury Campus.

There will be practical demonstrations, skills workshops and formal taught sessions.

There will be opportunities for you to complete work experience.

Course content

The course teaches about:

  • animal welfare
  • handling and restraint methods
  • working in animal care environments
  • animal science and nutrition
  • health and safety

Entry requirements

You will need a good general education with 4 GCSEs at E or above in Science and/or Maths and English or relevant work experience. However, most important of all is your interest in working with animals.


Assessment is by coursework portfolio and online assessments.

Future opportunities

You can progress onto higher level qualifications such as the Level 2 Diploma in Animal Care or you can go on to employment, for example in boarding kennels, catteries, dog grooming parlours and pet shops.
