Art & Design (Video Game Environments) UAL Level 3 Diploma at The City of Liverpool College

Course description

The Diploma in Video Game Environments is a fast past practical, work-related course. You will learn cutting edge skills by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands. As well as learning about the employment area you have chosen, you will develop the skills you need to start a career. The course is the equivalent to three ‘A levels’ which means when you have finished the course you can choose whether to seek employment or progress onto higher education.

Course content

You will gain a valuable insight into the Gaming industry, which will include: Research Techniques, Professional Practice in the Games Industry, Production Management, Digital Graphics, Games Platforms and Technologies, Concept Art (Traditional and Digital), 3D Modelling, 3D Animation, 3D Environments, Game Engines, Game Design, Working in the Games Industry. You will also be completing employment tests and building a professional portfolio.

Entry requirements

You will normally need to have at least one of the following:

  • a BTEC First Certificate or Diploma in a related subject.
  • at least 5 GCSEs at grades A*-C, including English or maths.
  • appropriate work experience.

As part of the interview process we will be assessing your ability to represent your ideas visually. Please bring a portfolio or samples of your visual work. We are mainly looking for drawings/sketches, sketch books, photos, digital images, graphics, or a collection of design ideas. Try to avoid anime, Manga and Cartoons, we would much rather see observational drawing. Don’t worry if you haven’t got any of these at the moment; you still have time before the interview date to produce some examples of how your ideas might look visually. Please ensure you bring these with you as if you arrive without them it will mean we cannot offer you a place on the course.

    • The Arts Centre is located in Liverpool's Hope Street Quarter.
