Physical Education A Level at South Axholme Academy

Course description

AS/A level Physical Education builds on the student’s experience from KS4 and GCSE PE to enhance their knowledge and increase their understanding of the factors that affect performance and participation in Physical Education. You will learn about the opportunities for and benefits of leading an active lifestyle as well as performing, analysing and evaluating roles in sport as a player, coach or official.

Course content

During the AS course you will study a variety of areas including opportunities for and the effects of leading a healthy and active lifestyle. This unit will include applied exercise physiology (in both theoretical and practical situations), skill acquisition and opportunities for participation. You will also analyse and evaluate your practical performance as a performer and/or in an adopted role. In the second year of the course you will study optimising performance and evaluating contemporary issues in sport. You will again be assessed in an adopted role in a practical situation.

Entry requirements

You will need to achieve a grade C or above for both English and Maths.

Assessment

This qualification is linear. Linear means that students will sit all their exams and submit all their non-exam assessment at the end of the course. For AS Level there is a 2 hour exam worth 70%. For the practical element the candidate is assessed in one sport as either a performer or coach. This is worth 30% of the AS Level grade.

For the A Level Qualification there are two exams, both worth 35% each and a practical assessment worth 30%.

Future opportunities

There are many career paths which involve the knowledge and skills developed by studying PE. These include teaching, coaching, officiating, administrative roles in sport, physiotherapy, medicine, personal trainer, armed forces, sports psychology and sports journalism. The practical element of the course also lends itself to maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle in later life.
