Course description

Why study Information and communication technology?

  • Studying ICT at Advanced level is a means of developing a deeper understanding of the significance of computers, applications and communications in the workplace and in every day life. Computer systems are used in a wide range of areas, from manufacturing and education to medicine, and ICT skills are valued in all aspects of business and society.
  • In a world of constant technological innovation, there is a demand for people who have the skills to refine and apply new developments to the real world. There‚Äôs a world-wide shortage of ICT graduates.

Course content

  • It is an applied course which demands an alternative learning strategy.
  • The instruction with given tasks can be quite ambiguous due to the nature of an applied course, and so it is down to the student to interpret each given scenario and apply prior knowledge in order to generate one of the many correct solutions.
  • It is essential that pupils have access to Microsoft Word, Excel and Access outside of the school in order to prepare for exams. Prior knowledge of spreadsheets and databases is essential.

  • The meaning of ICT
  • Network, Internet
  • Legal and Moral Issues
  • Applications which use ICT

Unit 2: Presenting Information

  • Learn about advanced DTP techniques
  • Multimedia presentations
  • Understand some of the ways business
  • Multimedia presentations

Assessment

Unit 1:

  • 60% of AS
  • Written examination

Unit 2:

  • 40% of AS
  • Course work: Portfolio
