Sport and Outdoor Education Diploma Level 3 at Gloucestershire College

Course description

This course gives you the opportunity to take part in various activities and develop a greater understanding and knowledge of the Outdoor Adventure industry.

The Outdoor Activity Industry is one of the fastest growing sectors of employment in the UK, with more and more people wanting to experience Outdoor activities for personal, social and group development.

The Level 3 Diploma in Outdoor Adventure will allow you to develop skills in Outdoor Activities through classroom and practical based sessions. Based at the Royal Forest of Dean Campus the course will offer a real life introduction to many great local locations for Outdoor Adventure Sports including the Forest of Dean, the Brecon Beacons and the River Wye.

The course will teach students the importance of health & safety whilst delivering Outdoor Activities and how planning can create a fun, productive and exciting experience for clients.

Over the course you will have opportunities to take part in Adventurous Activities/Sports and develop a higher understanding and knowledge of many of these. Our highly qualified coaches/lecturers will help you to develop your own leadership skills, these can be put into practice when taking part in and completing “National Governing Body Qualifications” through the later part of the course.

All these vital skills will help you develop a career pathway for the Outdoor Industry.

A series of trips has been arranged throughout the course and they are designed to enhance your learning. It is important to attend all trips as they make up part of your final mark.

  • Land based skills
  • Expedition skills
  • Fitness for Outdoor Education

Entry requirements

  • You need to have successfully completed four-five GCSEs at grades A* to C including English and Maths or have successfully completed a Level 2 qualification in a relevant subject with merit and have completed/made significant progress on the previous level of maths and English.
  • Selection is based on a successful interview and initial assessment outcome.
  • Successful completion of the Diploma in the first year is a pre-requisite for continuing onto the Extended Diploma in the second year.

You will be informed of fees at the beginning of the course.

Future opportunities

Upon completion, you could seek employment in various instructor roles, including: Paddlesports instructor, Multi activity instructor, or a Watersports instructor. Alternatively you may wish to move onto a Higher Education Outdoor Adventure course.
