Mathematics at Longcroft School

Course description

The Advanced Level Mathematics materials have been developed with the aim of providing a Sixth Form course which carries forward the changes in mathematics teaching and learning embodied in GCSE.
Students are actively involved in developing mathematical ideas. Premature abstraction and over reliance on algorithms are avoided.
Appropriate use is made of technological advances. For example, it is assumed that students will have access to a graphical calculator or computer with graph plotting facility. It is to be noted that although the graphical calculator is a useful aid to learning, its use in certain unit assessments is forbidden. Pure mathematics is the core of all advanced level mathematics syllabuses. Here the students will develop their skills in number, algebra and spatial topics, together with an introduction to calculus and formal proof.

Entry requirements

Students who wish to study this subject will usually have achieved an A*-B grade in GCSE Mathematics. They must be familiar with several areas of assumed background knowledge.
