Course content

Unit 1 (25% of A level – Exam 1 hr 30 mins) focuses on the later Tudor period, from 1547-1603. This includes an enquiry question based on the stability of the monarchy, religious change and rebellion in the years following Henry VIII death. The second part of this unit focuses on the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, exploring how her leadership, gender and religion caused scandal, affected the politics of Britain, her relations with other countries and ultimately the Queen’s power and popularity. Unit 2 (15% of A level – Exam 1 hr) focuses on the Cold War in Asia, 1945-1993. This begins by looking at the impact of agreements made by the Western Powers after World War II, how these caused the Cold War and why many parts of Asia became a key focus of tension where the two sides clashed. We will study the actions of several American Presidents and other leaders throughout the conflicts in Korea, Vietnam & Cambodia, also considering the changing relationship between the US and China. Unit 3 (40% of A level – Exam 2 hrs 30 mins) focuses on equality and the pursuit of Civil Rights in the USA between 1865 and 1992. Students will learn about a range of groups who fought for equal rights during this period and assess the progress they made. We will study the struggle of African Americans, the role of Martin Luther King Jr. in contrast with the Black Power Movement and the position and progress of other ethnic groups such as Native Americans. Students will also consider the labour movement for workers’ rights and the rise of Trade Unions, as well as the role of women and those fighting for gender equality during this period. Unit 4 (20% of A Level – Coursework essay) Students will select their own question from a list provided relating to one aspect of the previous topics. Students will then carry out a focussed independent enquiry with support from their teacher, to produce an essay of 3000-4000 words using primary and secondary sources.
