General Studies AS/A Level at The Maelor School

Course description

General Studies focuses on contemporary issues and encourages thinking. It develops students' abilities to make inferences from a range of sources, to argue and to draw conclusions. It fosters enquiry and critical thinking and so is a useful preparation for higher education and work.
General Studies uses a range of learning approaches including extensive discussion and debate. It also builds extended writing skills and the ability to structure a coherent argument. It gives students a better working knowledge of current affairs and will assist them in preparation for university interviews by giving them chance to broaden their understanding of a range of topics.
This course complements all other A level subjects. Maelor Sixth offers General Studies at AS only but unlike other centres gives it the same teaching time as any other AS. We recommend it to those students who do not have a fourth subject they wish to take, particularly if their knowledge of current affairs or extended writing skills are weak, as the course focuses on building these. It is not an easier option than other AS levels but can be useful to some students in strengthening their portfolio for higher education.

Entry requirements
