Financial Studies IFS Level 3 Diploma at Durham Sixth Form Centre

Course description

This Level 3 course enables students not only to learn how to manage their money effectively, but also learn about financial products such as credit card, loans, mortgages and pensions, helping them to prepare for financial independence and to make informed financial decisions throughout their lives.

Course content

The DipFS is a two year A Level equivalent qualification. The qualification enables students to make informed and confident decisions regarding their finances and helps them to become responsible borrowers, sensible savers and financial planners. In addition, it develops an understanding of issues beyond their own perspective; including that of the providers of financial servicse and to appreciate the consequences of decisions and their impact upon personal financial footprints. 

Mandatory units:

  • Unit 1: Financial Capability for the Immediate and Short Term
  • Unit 2: Financial Capability for the Medim and Long Term
  • Sustainability of the Individual's Finances
  • Sustainability of the Financial Services System

Entry requirements

There are a range of courses and pathways available to you at Durham Sixth Form Centre depending on your GCSE results and academic profile. In order to enrol with us as a student, you must have the minimum of 5 A*-C GCSE grades (or equivalent). In addition, individual subjects have specific entry requirements, which will be discussed with you during the application and enrolment process. Students who do not achieve a grade C or above (or numerical equivalent) in GCSE English and/or mathematics will be required to continue studying these subjects at Durham Sixth Form Centre.

Each unit will be assessed as follows:

  • Multiple-choice questions 35 x 1 mark for each correct answer (total marks: 35/100)
  • Pre-release case study requiring essay responses to 5 questions (total marks: 60/100)
  • Spelling, punctuation and grammar to be marked through the essay responses (total marks: 5/100)

These financial qualifications offer a seamless progression from further education into higher education and a career in the financial services industry by providing a thorough grounding in the workings of the financial system. Financial Studies is ideal for those students who wish to pursue careers in accounting, business, investment banking, management and finance, but financial acumen can support a wide number of other careers.

    • Durham Sixth Form Centre is located in Durham City Centre next to Gala Square and Freeman’s Quay. We are a couple of minutes walk from both the bus station and the railway station. Our students enjoy having all of the city centre facilities, shops, restaurants, the city library, cinema and theatre on our doorstep. In the city itself, students find a host of lively cultural, social and educational advantages and facilities. The galleries, exhibitions, museums and book shops all play their part in enriching the student experience. A large public car-park is directly opposite and adjacent to Durham Sixth Form Centre’s main entrance.
