French AS/A Level at Hall Cross Academy

Course description

At Hall Cross Academy we offer both French and Spanish at AS and A Level.

During the course you will study a variety of exciting new topics such as studying a film or novel in the target language as well as modern world issues such as gender, stereotypes, lifestyles, ethics, technological advances, the environment ,politics and law.

You will learn many transferable, cross-curricular skills which will be of great use to you in later life.

You will have the chance to go on a trip abroad and will have a lesson with the Foreign Language Assistant each week.

Course content

AS Level

Component 1 - Comprehension.
Listening, Reading and Translation into English, 37% of total AS level, 1 hour 30 minutes.

Component 2 - Writing.
Translation and critical essay on a film or literary text, 33% of total AS level, 1 hour 30 minutes.

Component 3 - Speaking
2 discussions with stimulus cards, 12-14 minutes. 30% of total AS level. Topics are: Stereotypes,equality,gender,modern world issues, and aspects of artistic culture.
A Level
Component 1 - Comprehension
Listening, Reading and Translation into English, 40% of total A level, 2 hours 30 minutes.

Component 2 - Writing
Translation,literary and critical essay on a film or literary text, 30% of total A level, 2 hours 45 minutes.

Component 3 - Speaking
1 discussion of stimulus card, plus research project,16-18 minutes. 30% of total A level. Topics are as AS and in addition Law and Order,Medical advances and related ethical issues,Aspects of political culture.

Entry requirements

B grade in French.

Assessment

70% is a written exam and 30 % is a Speaking test at both AS and A level.

1 compulsory hour with the native speaking Foreign Language Assistant each week either individually or in small group
