Further Mathematics A level **FEES PAYABLE** at Blackheath High School

Course description

Further Mathematics is a very highly regarded AS level.  Students seeking to study mathematics, physics or engineering at university should consider taking this subject.  Oxford and Cambridge universities strongly prefer students applying fo rmathematics or engineering courses to have Further Mathematics to at least AS level.

Course content

AS level further mathematics consists of one compulsory module in pure mathematics  (further pure 1) and two applied mathematics modules (usually mechanics 1 and 2).  All three modules are examined in the summer term.

The further pure 1 module opens new horizons in pure mathematics, introducing imaginary numbers and matrices. In mechanics 1 and 2, students learn about forces, energy and motion.  There is some overlap between these modules and the physics modules 'forces and motion' and 'forces, fields and energy'.

A2 level further mathematics consistes of one compulsory module in pure mathematics (further pure 2) and two further modules which can be chosen according to the candidates strengths.

Entry requirements

The entrance requirement for further mathematics is an A* grade at GCSE alongside consistently high performance in AS level mathematics.
