Course description

GENERAL AIMS: The course aims to develop students’

understanding of English Language and Literature

as a combined discipline, drawing on their

experiences at GCSE as well as offering a meaningful

foundation for the study of English beyond GCE

level. The course gives students opportunities to

develop their strengths and deepen their enjoyment

by offering a great deal of choice within its units.

COURSE OUTLINE:

AS – ELLA1: Integrated Analysis and Text Production;

ELLA2: Analysing Speech and its Representations.

A2 – ELLA3: Comparative Analysis and Text Adaptation;

ELLA4: Comparative Analysis Through Independent Study.

NATURE OF STUDY: In addition to the set texts prescribed

by the exam board, students will be expected to read

widely within the genres, historical periods and the wider

work of the authors to inform and contextualise their study.

They will be expected to read non-fiction and media texts,

especially newspapers, regularly. Within lessons there will

be a mix of individual, paired and group work as well as

seminar style lessons which students will be expected

to lead from time to time. Regular written assignments

will be set to monitor progress and provide feedback,

while speaking and listening tasks such as presentations
