Physics AS/A2 Level at Chichester High School for Girls

Course description

There are 8 compulsory topics:

1. Measurements and their errors

2. Particles and radiation

3. Waves

4. Mechanics and materials

5. Electricity

6. Further mechanics and thermal physics

7. Fields and their consequences

8. Nuclear physics

In addition,one of the following option topics must be studied

•Astrophysics

•Medical physics

•Engineering physics

•Turning points in physics

•Electronics

There is no centre-marked coursework (such as the previousISAs). Instead there is a list of 12 compulsory practicalexperiments which are carried out as part of the topics listedabove. Knowledge and skills gained in these experiments areassessed in an exam paper at the end of the course.

5 GCSEs at grade C or above with a grade B in Physics andMaths or BB in Double Science (higher paper only)

Assessment

paper 1:2 hour paper

85 marks (60 marks in long and short answerquestions, 25 multiple choice)

Based on topics 1 to 5 and 6.1 (periodic motion)

34% of final grade

paper 2:2 hour paper

85 marks (60 marks in long and short answerquestions, 25 multiple choice)

Based on topics 6.2 (thermal physics), 7, 8 and links totopics 1 to 6.1

34% of final grade

paper 3:2 hour paper

SectionA: 45 marks in long and short answerquestions on practical experiments anddata analysis

Section B: 35 marks in long and short answerquestions on optional topic

32% of final grade

Practical Skill Endorsement 

These have no impact on the final grade awarded for theA level. However, the practical skill endorsement will bereported with the results. The student’s practical skills areassessed and monitored over the whole course against a setof criteria by the teacher. If all of the criteria are met by theend of the course, the teacher issues the practical skillendorsement.
