Dance A-Level at Worthing College

Course description

Dance is a study of various forms and styles together with an insight into the work of various choreographers. You will have the opportunity to choreograph work, both individually and within a group. A level Dance is designed to improve the accessibility of dance as a performing art, while at the same time fostering imagination and creativity and promoting, personal and social development. It is a joyous subject to take alongside any mix of AS/A levels or BTEC'S.

Course content

Understanding Dance - knowledge and underatanding of dance studio practice, the constituent features of dance and one set work.

Choreography and Performance –knowledge and skills required to choreograph and perform solo dances.

Dance Appreciation: Content and Context –an investigation into the modern dance form.

Group Choreography and Solo Performance –  a combination of choreography and performance of a group dance and solo dance.

Entry requirements

You need a minimum of five GCSEs at A*- C grade including GCSE Dance at grade C or above or other significant dance experience. If you do not have GCSE Dance you will be invited to audition. You must have good practical skills and should be taking at least one additional dance class outside College.


The course will be assessed partly by performance of dance pieces which will be externally assessed by a visiting examiner. You will also be assessed by written examination, also marked externally.

Future opportunities

Dance is recognised as an academic subject and therefore provides a suitable foundation for the study of Dance at a professional performers’ college or related courses in higher education.
