Applied Science AS OCR at Sandown Bay Academy
These new broad-based awards are designed to provide vocational alternatives to the various AS GCEs and GCEs in Science. They may be used to give a general vocational introduction to Science, or units may be selected to provide an introduction to more specialised areas. There are many opportunities for candidates to experience actively the scientific environment through work experience, links with local employers, case studies and research. The AS GCE Applied Science award may be used to complement other vocational courses or provide a work-related experience for candidates taking non-vocational subjects. This award provides progression from both GCSE Applied Science and other Science GCSEs. Using work-related contexts, innovative teaching and assessment methods, this offers a broad introduction to the science vocational area. It is designed to provide a progression route to higher education and further training for employment. This course is not suitable for students wishing to pursue academic science at university. This course is AS only and is being covered over a two year period •MODULE 1: ‘Science at work’ Portfolio 33.3% This covers research into a local company and how science applies to the efficient running of the business and its energy use. •MODULE 2: ‘Analysis at work’ Portfolio 33.3% This consists of a range of practical work and includes physical and chemical analysis techniques. •MODULE 3: ‘Monitoring the activity of the human body’ Exam 33.3% This covers the cardiovascular and respiratory systems, methods used to measure and analyse conditions of the body and imaging techniques. SPECIAL FEATURES: Strong vocational element with visits to local industry. A large proportion (67%) of assessment is portfolio based. A2 IS NOT BEING OFFERED, THIS IS AS ONLY
Students entering the course will usually have Applied Science (or other Science GCSEs) at grade CC or above. English and Maths at grade C are also desirable.
This course complements GNVQ courses such as Health & Social Care as well as other AS level subjects. You could take this course to complement other advanced level courses such as Biology, Physics and Chemistry or to prepare for the A2 part of an advanced GCE in Science, which could lead onto higher education, BTEC Higher Nationals or NVQ Levels 3 and 4 in areas of science, pharmacy or more general courses. With further training, you could go into a job related to science such as a Pharmacist, Medical Researcher or Scientist. The course will also help you to develop the basic skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers across all industries are looking for. This is a new qualification. It is designed to provide a progression route to higher education and further training for employment.
