Vocational Access Programme at Bath College

Course description

VAP is aimed at young people who have some idea of the area that they want to study, but are unsure of what they would like to do for a career, for employment, or who need more time to develop their confidence in the learning and practical skills. The course offers the chance to gain some experience in several different subject in the chosen area at Entry Level 3 and Level 1 as well as improving English and maths, IT and employment skills.

Course content

Functional skills English, maths, IT, employment skills, volunteering, work experience and social development qualifications are taken by all students.


Streams you choose from:


City Centre Campus:

Access to Engineering A – Plumbing/Refrigeration/Electrical
Access to Service Industries A – Hair and Beauty/Floristry
Access to Service Industries B – Retail/Hospitality and Catering
Access to Service Industries D – Public Services/Sport/T&T


Somer Valley Campus:

Access to Service Industries C – IT/Business/Retail
Access to Land Based – Animal Care
Access to Engineering B – Engineering and Motor Vehicle
Access to Construction – Construction/Painting and Decorating/Brick


Coursework, role plays, practical assessments, completion of a portfolio and online or paper-based assessments.

Future opportunities

Students who are successful on VAP will achieve a qualification equivalent to 3/4 GCSE’s at grade D, plus extra qualifications which will begin to develop your CV. You can then go onto study further qualification that specialises in the vocational area of your choice.
