Use of Maths A/S at Ilkley Grammar School

Course description

This AS course is primarily aimed at students requiring mathematics beyond GCSE level to support their study of other subjects. This qualification encourages students to develop their mathematical reasoning and modelling skills.

This course does not allow candidates to progress to A2 and should not be taken by those wishing to obtain Advanced GCE (A2) in Mathematics.

Course content

The qualification consists of the following units.

  • Working with algebraic and graphical techniques allows students to investigate functions commonly used to model real situations using graphical and analytical techniques. Also it demonstrates how you can model your own data with appropriate functions.
  • Using and applying statistics allows students to carry out statistical work where you investigate an issue, select and analyse appropriate data and draw conclusions from it.
  • Applying mathematics is studied alongside and extends further the above units particularly in the areas of algebra, functions and graphs.

Entry requirements

Minimum grade C in GCSE Mathematics.

Appropriate for students who have studied Intermediate Tier GCSE.

This AS course is primarily aimed at students requiring mathematics beyond GCSE level to support their study of other subjects; in particular Humanities, Business/Economics, Psychology and the Sciences.

This course does not allow candidates to progress to A2 and should not be taken by those wishing to obtain Advanced GCE (A2) in Mathematics.

Assessment

The first two units are each assessed by an external examination, of 1.5 hours duration, and an internally assessed portfolio having equal weighting.

Applying mathematics is solely assessed by external examination: 70% written paper 1.5 hours in duration and 30% comprehension paper - 1 hour duration

Future opportunities

Each unit can be taken as Free Standing Mathematics Qualifications in their own right which arerecognised by UCAS.

The Faculty strongly recommends that each student possesses a graphical calculator. These can be bought at a reduced cost from the school in September.
