Course description

The games design and development course is a huge growth area and become  one of the largest sectors in the media and computing based industry. Be part of one of the most engaging leisure industries available  This course aims to provide a foundation to the industry and the design, development, production and marketing of games.  You will also develop an understanding of different game platforms, engines and technical techniques used in the industry, providing you with introductory knowledge of how to develop playable and exciting computer games of your own.

You will also learn employability skills and develop your portfolio, which you can use as you progress on to university/or the computer games industry


Course content

The games design course will enable you to develop skills in:

  • 3D modelling, 3D environments and 3D animation sound for computer games
  • Computer games engines, computer games platforms and technologies
  • Digital graphics for computer games
  • Understanding the computer games industry
  • Computer games design
  • Computer games story development plus various other media and games subjects




Entry requirements

Advanced Level 5 Cs/4s at GCSE

Intermediate Level 4Ds/3s at GCSE

Foundation Level  E/Fs or 1/2s at GCSE


Assessment is by a mixture of assignments, practical tasks, and presentations

Financial information

All full time courses are free to 16-18 year olds who are EU Citizens.

Future opportunities

Many students progress on to university degree level courses, such as animation, illustration, games design and programming.  You could go on to develop games software in systems analysis, planning and technical management, or information management and database environments. Students can also continue their studies at Salford College onto our Foundation Degree in Games Design and Development
