Music Technology (Production) BTEC Level 3 Certificate/Extended Certificate at Exeter College

Course description

This course is suitable for those who have some experience and/or a keen interest in sequencing , recording and performance. You will learn to build upon learnt skills in sound recording, sequencing and mixing, by applying them to a broad range of music styles and genres. In your first year you will study the Certificate progressing to the Subsidiary Diploma in your second year.

Course content

The Level 3 Certificate in Music Technology comprises of 3 units of study:

  • MIDI Sequencing Systems and Techniques
  • Music Production Techniques
  • Music Technology in Performance

All units are largely practical but involve individual research and presentation. On successful completion of the Certificate, you can progress to the Level 3 Diploma in year two, gaining a full A Level equivalent (60 units in total).

The three study units of the Subsidiary Diploma are:

  • Sound Creation and Manipulation
  • Delivering a Music Product
  • Live Sound

Entry requirements

You need at least five GCSEs at Grade C or above (including English Language). The ability to sing or play an instrument to a comfortable standard is desirable. Previous experience with some form of sequencing/recording is advantageous e.g Logic Pro, Cubase, Protools, Garage Band, Fruity Loops.

Assessment

There are three units of study in each year. Assessment is continuous throughout the course. Course work (written and practical) is assessed internally.

Future opportunities

In your second year, you can progress to the Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Music Technology then you could progress to higher-level courses in music technology.
