Painting & Decorating Intermediate Apprenticeship Level 2 at PETROC

Course description

Making buildings look their best with a perfect finish, the Apprenticeship in Decorative Occupations is studied over two years. City and Guilds apprentice will also study for the Construction Diploma Level 2 and may then progress to an Advanced Apprenticeship (Level 3) which will include the Construction Diploma Level 3.

Course content


  • unit 101 Conforming to general health, safety and welfare in the workplace
  • unit 204 Applying paint systems by brush and roller in the workplace
  • unit 218 Conforming to productive working practices in the workplace
  • unit 224 Erecting and dismantling access/working platforms in the workplace
  • unit 608 Moving, handling and storing resources in the workplace
  • unit 676 Preparing surfaces for painting/decorating in the workplace

Entry requirements

4 GCSEs at Grade D or equivalent or above ideally to include maths and English, this could include Functional skills level1 in Maths and English and or Level 1 course in Decorative Occupations. You must be employed in order to start this programme. Enthusiasm for your subject and a willingness to work hard are essential.
Students will be required to buy PPE, stationery and textbooks. Specific guidance given by programme manager.


A trained and skilled assessor will visit you in the workplace to monitor your progress and to assess your skills and knowledge. The assessor will give you targets to achieve until the next visit. There are written assignments and practical tasks that require evidencing. You will need a work base recorder who may be used to verify and witness skills and work carried out by yourself.

Future opportunities

Following this, students can progress to the Advanced Apprenticeship or other Level 3 courses within the Architecture and Construction field.

Further information

During your time at college, theory sessions are taught in fully equipped classrooms with Smart Boards and other teaching and learning devices. Specialist workshops are used to deliver the practical training. All assessors are skilled tradesman in Painting and Decorating and time served, approved by the awarding body City and Guilds.
