Plumbing Craft Level 2 Diploma at Darlington College

Course description

If you are interested in working in the Plumbing sector this course will provide you with the ideal platform on which to make your career choices. The course is a split 50/50 practical and theory which will allow you to learn and develop various skills relating to the building services industry.

The Plumbing Diploma study programme will consist of five key elements which you will need to complete:

Main Qualification – as above
Individual & Group tutorial sessions
Industry related work placement
Development of English and Mathematics. You will be required to undertake a formal qualification if you have not already achieved at L2.
Development of enterprise and employability skills

*You will be required to participate in trips and visits which may incur costs which you be notified of in a timely manner.

Course content

Teaching and learning is achieved by using a range of methods including formal classes, set tutorial periods and workshops to support many of the unit assessments.

This is a practical and theory based course, where you will learn through underpinning theory sessions. Practical assignments are carried out in the college site area where you will learn key principles. This course is supported by individual and group tutorial sessions.

It is also expected that you will attend college in suitable work wear / clothes; it will be possible to order this directly with suppliers during college enrolment.

Key principles covered include:

Health and safety in building services engineering
Electrical principles and processes
Scientific principles for plumbing
Common plumbing processes
Cold water systems
Domestic hot water systems
Central heating systems
Drainage systems
Understanding how to communicate with others within building services engineering

Entry requirements

You will need a Level 1 Diploma or 4 GCSEs at D or above including GCSE English or maths. You will also be required to sit and pass the British Plumbing Education Council (BPEC) test.

You will be required to attend an interview at the college and we will request a school or college report.


You will undertake graded assessments through a range of methods including :

  • Practical tasks
  • Online Multi-Choice Test
  • Paper based Tests

Future opportunities

This course can help in the process of gaining employment within the construction industry or to begin an Apprenticeship.
