English Language AS Level at St Vincent College

Course description

We investigate the many varieties of English and the ways in which both spoken and written language can affect us as language users. If you enjoy finding out about the role and power of language, the way in which it varies and changes due to a number of different factors and the importance of basic grammar to our understanding of human experience, then this is the course for you.

Course content

Component 1 – Language Context and Identity (Exam)
Students explore how context and reception affect language choices and how writers/speakers present themselves to audiences.
(50% of the course)

Component 2 – Child Language (Exam)
Students explore theories surrounding how children learn how to speak and write.
(50% of the course)

Entry requirements

Five GCSEs grade A* – C which MUST include English Language AND English Literature

Two external exams
