Modern Foreign Languages AS/A-Level German/Spanish at Greig City Academy
The study of Foreign Languages at the Advanced GCE level is geared towards students with an already high level of competence in each of the four skills examined at the GCSE level – Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. During the course, students refine these skills and increase their sensitivity to language and language learning via more sophisticated use of language in debate, argument and discussion. Through the use of authentic media- videos, music, the internet, magazines, literature – students explore and critically analyze contemporary issues relevant to the German-speaking societies studied and consequently reflect upon comparisons drawn between these societies and those with which they are familiar.
Advanced level study in modern foreign languages is highly regarded by admissions tutors in all disciplines at universities.
In addition to the taught courses, there are further opportunities for students to take examinations and examination courses in a wide variety of Modern Foreign Languages. Prospective students should discuss their requirements with the Language team at the Academy.
Students will normally require a minimum of 260 points. Applicants will ideally have a GCSE or equivalent Grade B in the chosen subjects plus C+ grades in English and Mathematics.
The first two of the required four units are assessed at the end of the first year and represent 100% of an Advanced Subsidiary award OR 50% of the Advanced GCE. Some topics which are covered in Units 6GN01/02 are:
- Youth culture and concerns
- Healthy lifestyle
- Education and Employment
- Travel and tourism
Units 6GN03/04 are assessed at the end of the second year of study and account for the final 50% of the Advanced GCE. Along with the topics covered in the first two units, students will also study:
- Customs, traditions belief and religion
6GN01 - Speaking 30% 15%
6GN02 - Understanding and written response - 70% 35%
6GN03 - Understanding and spoken response - 17.5%
