A Level Fine Art and Photography at Ilfracombe Academy

Course description

The new A Levels in Fine Art and in Photography will be linear so assessment of a pupil’s knowledge, skills and understanding of the whole course, takes place after two years. The first assessment of the two year course will take place in summer 2017. However, for those who we think might benefit from doing so, we will consider entering for AS Level in summer 2016. The AS qualification does not contribute towards the final A Level grade.

Through the experience of working with a broad range of media, students can develop a high level of knowledge and skills that include critical, contextual and analytical understanding, enhancing their ability to access either higher education or the work place.

Assessment

AS Level Specification

Component 1. Externally set task.

Exam paper issued on 1 January providing a number of themes and starting points. Several weeks preparation time to develop ideas and then a controlled test. (10 hours) 100% of total AS Level

A Level Specification

Component 1. Personal Investigation

A portfolio of work showing a personal response to a theme. A related Contextual study of continuous prose, minimum 1000 words. 60%

Component 2. Externally set task

Exam paper released on 1 February. Providing a number of starting points. Several weeks preparation time to develop ideas and then a controlled test. (15 hours) 40%

Future opportunities

Britain leads the world with a whole variety of creative industries including Exhibition Design, Fashion and Textiles, Furniture Design, Graphic Design, Photography, Illustration and Theatre Design. Qualifications in Art & Design are also required in a wide range of other careers: Architecture, Product Design, Landscape and Garden Design, Animation and Game Design. Apart from the more traditional routes of employment in the creative industries, Photography will also open up opportunities in Journalism, Weddings, Medical Photography and Advertising.
