Sports, Public Services and Outdoor Education Level 1 Diploma at Bridgwater College

Course description

This course will appeal to students who would like an opportunity to have a second chance at education and study a course specifically focused on sport, public services and outdoor adventures. This course is suitable for students who are more practical minded. If you are interested in a career in the sports industry, emergency or armed services or outdoor activities then this is the course for you.

Course content

The course will be a practical and theoretical based course designed to develop basic skills and subject knowledge.  To achieve the qualification you will study a selection of BTEC units which include Sports, Public Services and Outdoor Education.  

The units of study may include:

  • Introduction to Expedition Skills
  • Practical Teamwork for the Public Services
  • Forensic Detection
  • Public Service Incidents
  • Introduction to Map work and Navigation
  • Working as a volunteer
  • Planning own fitness programme
  • Improving own fitness
  • Taking part in sport

You will be given the opportunity to achieve additional qualifications alongside your main course. These will include qualifications and specialist awards that are relevant to the subject you are studying which could include:

  • BCU Paddle Star 1 or 2
  • Sports Leaders Level 1
  • First Aid

Entry requirements

  • GCSEs in the D – G range.
  • A positive attitude to learning and an interest in sport Public services and outdoor activities
  • Successful completion of an Entry Level 3 Qualification


The course is based on continual assessment with each of the BTEC units being graded at pass level. The assessments will vary from individual written work to group presentations and practical assessments.

Future opportunities

This course aims to prepare you to progress onto a Level 2 qualification in a related subject or into employment  such as:

  • Level 2 Diploma in Sport or Outdoor Adventure or Level 2 Diploma in Public Services
  • Armed or emergency service careers in the British Army, Royal Navy, Royal Air Force, Royal  Marines or Reserves, Police, Fire or Ambulance Service
  • Employment in the Sport and Leisure industry or outdoor adventurous activity industry
