Work Based Horse Care Level 2 Diploma at Northumberland College

Course description

This is a work-based Horse Care qualification which is suitable for anyone with a job or work placement in the equine industry. The level 2 will suit you if you are working in horse care and want a qualification to show you have the skills to do your job. A level 2 Work Based Diploma can be a stepping stone to a level 3, will help with professional development and prepare you for higher level training.

Course content

The Work Based Diploma offers a variety of options depending on your industry specialism, these include: L2 work Based Diploma in Horse Care with Management L2 Work Based Diploma in Horse Care with Riding L2 Work Based Diploma in Horse Care with Breeding The Qualification consist of 7 Mandatory units which include Clean and maintain stables Provide feed and water to horses Carry out routine care and monitor the health and well-being of horses Restrain horses using specified methods Monitoring and maintaining health and safety Maintain and develop personal performance Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others There are a wide range of optional units which can be chosen to enhance your employability, develop a range of skills or give you a qualification in your chosen sphere. These include modules such as: Fit and remove horse clothing Plait and trim horses manes and tails Clean and groom horses for appearance Fit, remove and maintain tack for exercise Ride and jump a schooled horse Lunge a horse under supervision

Entry requirements

You do not need any formal qualifications although a strong interest in horses is essential. Previous riding experience is beneficial. To embark on a work based Diploma you need to be employed in industry.


Progress is assessed by a range of methods which include practical assessments, observations and written assignments. A qualified assessor will carry out practical assessment at you place of work. 1:1 progress reviews ensure that students remain motivated and continue to work to their full potential.

Future opportunities

The Level 2 work based Diploma has been developed to equip learners to progress in their employment or progress to further training. A person qualified to level 2 in Horse Care would be expected to undertake jobs such as: Trainee Riding Instructor Riding School Groom Competition Groom Trainee yard manager
