Course description

You will learn about atoms and atomic structure, kinetics and equilibrium, hydrocarbons, periodicity, halogens and Organic Chemistry and many more interesting topics.

This course is very unique amongst the A Level Sciences in that it progresses very smoothly from GCSE and also topics studied at AS are mostly repeated at A2 with a little more detail. This tends to help students who have worked effectively at AS Level.

You will also learn a great deal of practical skills as well as the ability to work as a team and how to co-ooperate with other students

Extra support and encouragement will be provided when needed and you will feel secure and valued in this subject.

Entry requirements

Five or more A*-C grade passes in GCSE subjects including English & Maths

GCSE A grade will be required for Maths, Physics & Chemistry. At least a GCSE B grade will be required for Biology & Modern Languages with a B in a Science subject required for Psychology.

You will be continually assessed throughout the course. There will be modular examinations to complete in June of both year 12 and year 13. There will be also an ISA piece of coursework to be completed in each year and this is worth 33% of the overall course grade.  There are also twelve key practicals to perform and your practical skills will be assessed during the completion of these.

Future opportunities

Chemistry is a highly valued academic qualification and may lead to a variety of careers including medicine, pharmacy, industrial chemistry, engineering, medicinal chemistry and scientific journalism.  Successful chemistry students are highly sought after and many work in public services, technical sales, finance and investment

This course holds a huge amount of credibility with all universities both in this country and abroad. Employers are also aware of the level of student that would acquire this qualification.

Further information

Students find post-16 chemistry even more interesting as they begin to discover the real resons why chemicals react with one another.  The course extends some of the subject matter encountered in the Chemistry section of the GCSE course such as electronic arrangements, rate of reactions and fractional distillation. There is also the introduction to some new branches of Chemistry such as chemical calculations, aromatic chemistry, kinetics, thermodynamics and transition metal chemistry.

Alongside the theory, students learn some important chemical technicques such as titrations, distillation, filtration and checking the purity of compounds. Overall the AS and A Level Chemistry course is a demanding but very rewarding subject to study. Students will learn the detail of chemical reactions and will gain a deep appreciation of Chemistry and the significance of Chemistry to everyday life
