Course description

Mathematics is a beautiful and exciting subject which underpins many other areas of learning. It has been fundamental to the development of the modern world and has impacted on everything ever invented. The ability to reason and think logically is crucial in every area of study and employment. The mathematics course will fine-tune your thinking skills making you a sought after candidate for university places and in employment. Having A-Level mathematics on your C.V. will make you stand out from the crowd.

Course content

Completion of six modules in Year 12 resulting in the completion of AS Mathematics and AS Further Mathematics (double the number of lessons per week):

  • Core (pure) 1 & 2
  • Mechanics 1
  • Statistics 1
  • Decisions 1
  • Further Pure 1

A2 – Completion of three additional modules in Year 13:

  • Core (pure) 3 and 4
  • Mechanics 2
  • Statistics 2
  • Further Pure 2 and 3

Entry requirements

To pursue ‘Further Mathematics’ you should gain an A* grade at GCSE.


The course is modular with six examinations per year taking place in June which are equally weighted and last 90 minutes. There are no controlled assessment elements in the course.

Future opportunities

Mathematicians are highly valued by both further education institutions and employers alike. Opportunities exist in industry, banking and finance as accountants and actuaries as well as in management. Mathematics A level is invaluable for people hoping to study engineering or sciences at university. In addition, ‘Further Mathematics’ is academically very demanding and hence prestigious. It is the ideal course if you intend to study mathematics at university and is useful when applying for competitive entry university courses.
