English Language and Literature AS level at Nower Hill High School

Course description

This course integrates the study of language and literature – both spoken and written - and will enable you to develop your analytical and creative writing skills. You will study poetry and prose texts in the first year as well as a collection of non-fiction texts in an anthology. Additionally, you will practise your original and creative writing skills in preparation for the A level coursework and the examination.

Course content

AS Component 1 (Non-fiction spoken and written texts)

  • One question comparing two of the anthology texts
  • Write a non-fiction text for a specific audience and purpose

AS Component 2 (The language of literary texts)

  • F. Scott Fitzgerald’s ‘The Great Gatsby’
  • Carol Ann Duffy’s ‘Rapture’

Entry requirements

A B grade in at least one of your two English GCSEs (English Language and English Literature).

Assessment

100% exam.

Are there any other costs?

Theatre trips and study days when available. Supplementary reading material is essential to read widely around the texts you are studying. We do have an excellently stocked library so this does not need to be an additional expense!

Future opportunities

A Level English Language and Literature provides a good foundation for degree courses in English, the Arts, Humanities, Law and Media. It can also lead to careers in writing, journalism, management and administration, teaching, law and the media. English degrees can lead to careers in anything and everything!
