Product Design at Outwood Grange Academy

Course description

This is a popular course that explores a wide range of design and manufacturing possibilities.

Students will be able to recognise design needs and develop an understanding of how current global issues, including integrating technology, impact on today's world.  Students will have the confidence to innovate and produce creative design solutions as they develop their own design brief with a client/end user.

The exam will allow students to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of design, whilst the coursework provides an opportunity to express creative and technical abilities.

Maths and Science skills are fundamental to design and technology.  These will be embedded within the examination for this qualification.

Completing the course will provide students with the perfect foundation for a wide range of creative, practical and construction themed career paths.

Course content

What will I learn at AS Level?

Students will be given the freedom to take design risks and innovate in a situation where it is safe to test and refine ideas, giving them the confidence.  They will explore a huge range of design techiques:

  • High level CAD development
  • Exploring visual language
  • Researching and developing resources
  • Exploring personal responses to given and own thesmes
  • Creative use of media
  • How to research and source inspiration from contemporary and historical sources
  • 3D and Computer Illustration
  • Analytical skills
  • Digital enhancement of design ideas
  • Use of new technologies

What will I learn at A Level?

To further develop the skills learnt in year 12.  To develop their own design brief with a client/end user.  Students will produce a focussed portfolio/practical which covers the design and development of a product.

Entry requirements

A-C at GCSE Design and Technology, a passion for Graphic/Product Design.  You need to be creative, imaginative and be able to work independently.

  • Internally assessed coursework and exam.
  • Portfolio/Coursework 50%

The creative industry is one of the biggest and most successful industries.  Additionally, the capactiy to find creative solutions to complex problems is one of the most sought after skills by employers.  There are many careers and opportunities associated with the creative industry.
