Improving Operational Performance Apprenticeship (Level 2 Intermediate and Level 3 Advanced) at Blackburn College

Course description

This apprenticeship is designed for those who want to work in an engineering environment and undertake the best possible preparation to achieving trained operator status within the industry. The Performance Manufacturing Operations apprenticeship focuses on training to operate effectively in a manufacturing environment. Typical job roles include assembly operations of electrical and electronic products, vehicles, aerospace, marine, metal goods and production of moulded products. 

Course content

  • Working Effectively and Efficiently in Engineering
  • Using and Communicating Technical Information
  • Producing Components using Hand Fitting Techniques
  • Preparing and Using Lathes for Turning Operations
  • Preparing and using Milling Machines

Entry requirements

There are no specific entry requirements to study an Apprenticeship at Blackburn College. You will have an initial assessment when you come in for an interview, and this will show the level of English and maths qualifications, known as functional skills, that you will study alongside your apprenticeship.

Blackburn College will work with applicants to help find a suitable employer where possible. However we always advise anyone looking to undertake an apprenticeship to be actively seeking employment for themselves too.


You will be assessed by practical demonstration, assignment and examination.

Future opportunities

The Advanced Apprenticeship will give you the opportunity to progress onto the Higher Level Apprenticeship. Learning will be tailored to your job role in your organisation, where it is likely you will be responsible for the delivery of a service or how other people carry out their work.

You will also be able to move into Higher Education and will be able to apply for a range of University courses.
