BTEC Extended Certificate in Applied Science at Cromwell Community College

Course description

BTEC Level 3 extended certificate broadens and expands the specialist work-related focus of this exciting Science qualification.

There is potential for the qualification to prepare learners for employment in the appropriate vocational sector and it is suitable for those who have decided that they wish to enter a particular area of scientific work.

It is broadly equivalent to one GCE A Levels and is accepted by many universities.

Course content

There are 3 core units which must be completed, Principles and applications of scoence, Science investigation skills and Practical scienfic procedures and techniques. Over the two year course there are 360 guided learning hours.

The exciting part of this qualification is that a further 9 units can be studied across all of the science disciplines. Examples include the Physiology of Human Body Systems, Biochemistry and Biochemical Techniques and Electrical Circuits and their Applications.


Learners will be awarded a merit or distinction or distinction* qualification grade (or a combination of these grades appropriate to the qualification) by the aggregation of points gained through the successful achievement of individual units.

The number of points available is dependent on the unit level and grade achieved, and the credit size of the unit.

This course is an excellent qualification if you are considering a scientific career. To be successful on this course you will need a great attention to detail, be able to follow prescriptive instructions and meet very strict deadlines.
