Product Design: Textiles at BARR BEACON SCHOOL

Course description

Product Design: Textiles is an exciting new course that aims to develop the knowledge, skills and understanding needed for designing new textile products. The course focuses on creativity and sustainability.

Course content

You will be encouraged to:

initiate design solutions and develop, test and trial working models and prototypes;

develop and sustain imagination, innovation and flair when working with materials;

develop an understanding of contemporary design and technological practices;

develop thinking skills, financial capability, enterprise and entrepreneurial skills.

Entry requirements

You should obviously have an interest in design, fashion and textiles. The ability to be imaginative and creative as well as a willingness to experiment with new ideas are key attributes. Good textiles construction skills would be an advantage but these can be developed. A good GCSE in Textiles would be an advantage but this is not essential.

Assessment

The course is divided into four units:

Unit 1: Advanced Innovation Challenge

You will be required to sit a 7 hour timed challenge under examination conditions. The challenge will be divided into two or three hour sessions. It will be based upon a pre released theme set by the exam board.

Unit 2: Product Study (AS level)

This is a coursework portfolio that will require you to develop an existing product.

Unit 3: Design, Make and Evaluate (A2 level)

You will be required to produce a coursework portfolio that will show your imagination, innovation and flair in designing and making as well as the ability to critically evaluate the product and processes.

Unit 4: Product Design (A2 level)

This is an externally set exam.
