Mechanical Engineering Level 3 Extended Diploma at East Surrey College

Course description

This qualification is designed to meet the needs of those preparing to pursue a career within Mechanical Engineering. It offers routes into further study (Higher Education) and a range of employment opportunities at Engineering Technician level.

Course content

The course consists of core units common to all BTEC Engineering programmes and twelve additional units chose from a range.
Core Units:
 Communication for Technicians
 Health and Safety at Engineering Workplaces
 Mathematics for Technicians
 Mechanical Principles and Applications
 Project (This is a double unit taken in the second year)
Additional Units may include:
 Further Mathematics for Technicians
 Mechanical Principles and Devices
 Commercial Aspects of Organisations Employing Engineers
 Principles and Applications of Fluid Mechanics
 Principles and Applications of Thermodynamics
 Engineering Drawing for Technicians
 Computer Aided Drafting
 Electrical & Electronic Principles
 Further Mechanical Principles
 Advanced Mechanical Principles and Applications
 Selection and Applications of Programme Logic Controllers
 Properties and Applications of Engineering Materials
 Electro, Pneumatic and Hydraulic systems and Devices
 Engineering Design


Entry requirements

Students must have at least 5 GCSEs at Grade C or above (including Maths, Science and English) or Engineering Level 2 Diploma at Merit or above together with a satisfactory interview. A technical background would be useful but not essential. Suitable prior knowledge and skills will be taken into account at interview.


The course will be internally assessed through a programme of assignments, projects, case studies & practical activities.

Financial information

If you are under 19 on 31/08/2015, tuition is free. If you are 19 or over please consult Client Services for advice and guidance on funding and eligibility.
Please be aware that there may be additional costs for equipment and educational visits. This information will be available from the curriculum staff at interview.

Future opportunities

A successful student with a Merit grade or above in at least five subjects may have the opportunity to study a higher engineering course at this college or at university (see individual course entries for desired universities).This may be a degree or HND programme.
