Chemistry A Level at The Leventhorpe School
Students will study Chemistry in a range of different contexts, conveying the excitement of contemporary chemistry. Ideas are introduced in a spiral way with topics introduced in an early part of the course and reinforced later. All students enrolling on the A level course will follow the AS course in Year 12 and upon its successful completion, cover the further concepts, skills and knowledge in Year 13.
Grade B in GCSE Additional Science or Chemistry
AS Level Chemistry Examination 100% (No practical endorsement)
There are two examined components assessing all elements of the AS course. The AS course examines the fundamental aspects of chemistry; the periodic table and energy, and core organic chemistry. In addition we will develop practical skills that underpin the whole of the specification. These skills are reinforced through the two year course.
A Level Chemistry Examination 100% and a practical endorsement
The A2 course progresses in more depth the studies at AS, developing ideas in physical chemistry and the transition elements. Here students will study quantitative chemistry and develop further practical skills. The A level concludes by building on the organic content studied in year 1 and looking at the methods available to analyse these organic compounds. There are 3 papers which must be sat at the end of the year two which assess students’ knowledge of the entire course. The practical endorsement consists of a series of experimental activities designed to help students develop all aspects of their practical skills, data analysis, investigative planning and conclusion/evaluation of the entire experimental process. Scientific written and oral communication skills are assessed throughout.
