English Literature A Level (Edexcel) at Stroud High School

Course description

An A Level in English Literature is well regarded by universities and business institutions. It is an ideal complement to all other subjects because it provides communication, reflection, forward thinking and creativity.

Taking English at degree level offers a wide variety of career options in both the academic and vocational arenas. The course not only allows you to develop your interest and enjoyment of literary study, but also hones your skills of analysis, evaluation, problem solving and communication which prepare you for the world of work whatever career you decide to pursue. The breadth of opportunity the course offers allows students who are passionate about reading to engage with a range of texts from the Victorian novel to the contemporary poetry scene.

Course content

Component 1: Drama (Shakespeare: Measure for Measure and Other Drama: Streetcar Named Desire).

Component 2: Prose (The Picture of Dorian Gray and Dracula).

Component 3: Poetry (The poetry of John Keats and post-2000 poetry compared to unseen poetry).

Component 4: Coursework (Students produce one comparative assignment 2500-3000 words).

Entry requirements

Students are required to achieve at least a Grade 6 at GCSE level English.
