Course description

BTEC National Level 3 Children’s Play Learning & Development

- Option 1 National Subsidiary Award - equivalent to 1 AS level. Units 1 and 2.
- Option 2 National Award – equivalent to 1 A Level. Units: 1, 2, 4, 8, 9 and one from a list of specialist units.
- Option 3 National Diploma – equivalent to 3 A levels. Full two year programme of study. Units: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and other specialist units.

On successful completion of the National Diploma course, students receive ‘Early Years Educators’ status and become qualifed practitioners at Level 3. This qualifcation has been supported by employers and professional organisations e.g. The National Day Nursery Association, Montessori Centre International, Skills Active.

Placement: 750 hours work placement in three settings:
- Birth up to 1 year (11 months in a nursery)
- 2 up to 4 yrs (11 months in nursery, or pre-school)
- 5 up to 7 yrs (11 months in a classroom setting) Up to 150 hours can be in a setting for children with additional needs.

We are proud of our consistently outstanding results. Students usually achieve their target and above; those in our Year 13 classes achieve places at Universities or direct employment in the sector.

Course content

National Diploma Level 3 - Core Units Externally Assessed:
Unit 1: Child Development - external examination
Unit 11: Refective Practice - through placement experience
Unit 13: Research Skills - coursework

The course also includes other Core Units, for example:
Unit 2: Play and Learning
Unit 4: Health and Safety in Early Years Setting
Unit 7: Supporting Children’s Speech, Communication and Language
Unit 8: Safeguarding in Early Years

Optional Specialist Units for example:
Unit 15: Food and Meal times in Early Years
Unit 19: Working With Children Who Have Additional Needs
Unit 23: Supporting Children’s Creativity

Entry requirements

5 GCSE passes Grade C or above, including English. Maths should also be at Grade C or no less than Grade D and commitment to re-sit this and achieve a Grade C by the end of the course. Students wishing to progress to teaching require a Grade C in English, Maths and Science at GCSE.

All students taking ‘Option 3: BTEC National Diploma CPLD’ will be required to purchase two textbooks and a placement uniform (which is to be worn during all placements). Students will also be required to apply and pay for a DBS (All placements require a successful and valid DBS).

Future opportunities

Students often progress directly into Early Years Educator roles within the industry, or progress to university. Careers can include: Nursing, Child Psychology, Early Years or Primary Teaching, Special Needs, Social Work, Youth and Crime, and other Childhood Studies courses.

Skills that will be developed include: Linking theory to practice, Becoming a refective practitioner, Learning to accurately observe and record fndings, Excellent communication, Understanding and applying the Early Years Curriculum (EYFS).
