Mathematics A Level at Accrington and Rossendale College

Course description

The Mathematics course is an exciting opportunity to explore some of the depths of Maths. At its core is the development of a logical mind that prepares you for whatever you want to do in life. It builds on much of the content studied at Higher tier GCSE.

Course content

Over the 2 year course you’ll study 4 core modules as well as;

• Statistics, which extends the data handling and probability and is particularly useful for those considering a degree in Medicine or the Social Sciences.
• Mechanics, which develops an understanding of forces, complements the topics studied as part of the Physics A-Level.
• Decision and Discrete Mathematics, which explores the fundamental mathematics behind many computer programs and is invaluable for anyone wishing to study computing at university, is available at one centre.

Entry requirements

As part of a Full A Level Programme – 4 x A*-B grades at GCSE. Students must have a minimum of a B grade in Maths and a C grade in English.

As Part of a BTEC Options Programme – 5 x A-C grades at GCSE including a B grade in Maths.

Future opportunities

Mathematics is essential for several degree courses including Mathematics, Engineering, Physics, Computing and extremely valuable for others including Medicine, Veterinary Science, Accountancy and Social Sciences. Studying mathematics will help you to develop your reasoning and logic skills. Such skills are useful for any subject and highly valued by employers and universities.
