Geography Level 3 at North Hykeham Joint Sixth form

Course description

Geography matters because it’s relevant. Geography affects the way we live our everyday lives. It looks at the processes, cultures & countries that make up our planet, as well as considering some of the most critical issues affecting the world today, such as population growth, globalisation and environmental degradation.

Geography is an interesting course, and you will be expected to work hard. It is not a requirement that you should have studied Geography at GCSE in order to take an AS level or A level course in the subject. Several topics covered in the course are developments of work covered at GCSE, but others are new. What is more important is that you should have a lively and enquiring mind, an interest in the environment and current affairs, a willingness to explore new ideas and an ability to communicate your ideas effectively.

There are four units and staff have the option to choose which topics are studied within the units. Currently, the units and topics are as follows

Unit 1 Rivers, Floods and Management, Cold environments, Population Change, and Health Issues.

Unit 2 Geographical skills (includes cartographic, graphical, statistical &ICT skills).

Unit 3 Plate tectonics and associated hazards, Ecosystems: change and challenge and World cities.

Unit 4 Geography Issue Evaluation (an exam based on pre-release information).

Entry requirements

5 GCSE grades A* to C, with at least a Grade C in Geography and Maths.
