Film Studies - AS Overview: Alongside the analysis of film language and how film narratives and genre are constructed, this course delivers a significant examination of the business behind the 'show'. The course includes the exploration of production and audience needs in early and modern Hollywood and the modern British film industry. Films are examined as historical documents reflecting the nature of the society and audience that create and consume the products. Expect links with History, Sociology, Psychology, Art, English and Business. Assessment: Unit 1 Coursework - 40% - One analysis of micro features in an extract of candidtate's choice. One creative project based on a film sequence. Unit 2 Written exam - 60% - Response to stimulus materials about industry and audiences. Topics in British film. Comparative study of two US films.
You could take this course to complement other advanced level courses such as Media Studies or to prepare for the A2 part of an Advanced GCE in Film Studies, which could lead onto higher education to study Film Studies, related courses such as Media and Drama, or more general higher education courses. With Further training, you could go into a job related to film studies such as working within a film or TV production crew. You could also go straight into a job as the AS GCE is a recognised qualification that will help you develop the skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers across lots of industries are looking for, especially in the media and production industries.
