Course description

This course has no external examination and is assessed through coursework throughout the
course. The course is designed to give you an understanding of how the sporting world works.
The course is a double award course which means the opportunity is there to gain a Level 3
qualification which is equivalent to three ‘A’ Levels.
Course content
The course is split up into 12 units. Seven core units:
1 Principles of Anatomy and Physiology in Sport.
2 The Physiology of Fitness.
3 Assessing Risk in Sport.
4 Fitness Training and Programming.
5 Sports Coaching.
6 Sports Development.
7 Fitness Testing for Sport and Exercise.
Five optional units selected by the teacher, for example:
8 Practical Team Sports.
9 Practical Individual Sports.
10 Outdoor and Adventurous Activities.
11 Sports Nutrition.
12 Current Issues in Sport.
13 Leadership in Sport.
The course is assessed on a regular basis throughout the year. Assignments are set on a
weekly basis and can be assessed in a variety of ways such as Powerpoint presentations,
written tasks, case studies, practical work and group work.

Entry requirements

. Strong work ethic.
. Strong interest in PE and Sport.
. Participation at a good level in their own sport.
. Merit or Distinction at BTEC level 2.
. A minimum grade B in Science.
