BTEC Business at Thornleigh Salesian College
The Extended Certificate in Business is for learners who are interested in learning about the business sector alongside other fields of study with a view of progressing to a wide range of higher education courses. The qualification is equivalent to one A-Level.
Over the two year course, learners will study the following four units:
Unit 1 - Exploring a Business - In this introductory unit, learners study the purposes of different businesses, their structure, the effect of the external environment, and how they need to be dynamic and innovative to survive.
Unit 2 - Developing a Marketing Campaign - Learners will gain skills relating to, and an understanding of, how a marketing campaign is developed.
Unit 3 - Personal and Business Finance - Learners study the purpose and importance of personal and business finance. They will develop the skills and knowledge needed to understand, analyse and prepare financial information.
Unit 8 - Recruitment and Selection Process - Learners explore how the recruitment process is carried out in a business. The unit gives learners the opportunity to participate in selection interviews and review their performance.
5 A*-C including Maths and English. The course requires learners to work independently to complete assignments related to each unit. Strong numerical skills are particularly important to complete Unit 3 successfully.
Learners will be assessed in Unit 1 and Unit 8 through completing assignments in class and at home set by the teacher. Learners work will be assessed and graded by their class teacher.
Learners will be assessed in Unit 2 and 3 externally.
Unit 2 will require learners to complete a task set by the examination board under examination conditions. Learners will be provided with a case study two weeks before the supervised assessment period in order to carry out research. The supervised assessment period is a maximum of three hours.
Unit 3 is assessed through a 2 hour written examination completed in the second year of the course.
The course is likely to be of particular interest and value to those students thinking of pursuing careers in management, accountancy and finance, personnel and marketing as well as industries such as banking, insurance and retail. Students with an interest in modern languages, computing, science and engineering would also find valuable links with the business world.
The qualification carries UCAS points and is recognised by higher education providers as contributing to meeting admission requirements for many courses if taken alongside other qualifications as part of a two year programme of learning. It will support entry to many higher education courses, depending on the other qualifications learners have taken. Learners should always check the entry requirements for degree programmes at specific higher education providers. The qualification can also support progression to employment directly, or via an Apprenticeship.
