Design Technology - Product Design A2 at Challenge College

Course description

Product design is about the creation of new items that people will buy. It includes appearance and function, and needs the balance of science and art for its success. Styling and function are crucial to commercial success, and through product design you will gain a thorough understanding of the processes involved in turning ideas into attractive and useful products. Shape, colour, user perception, usability and sustainablity are just some of the elements you will learn to work with.

Course content

Students will learn about the same stages of the design process as a practising designer. These include:

* Identifying a design problem.

* Discussing the requirements of the brief.

* Researching factors such as target market, design styles, fashions and trends.

* Creating ideas and developing them into a finished design.

* Using CAD and models to visualise the product.

* Planning and manufacturing the product (or Prototype).

* Evaluating the final outcome.

This will be done through the production of a single major project of the students choosing, this will be submitted for assessment. Along side this students will under take a range of theory based assignments.

Entry requirements

To have completed a minimum D Grade at AS Product Design

A keen interest in design


After the first year successful candidates will continue on to complete 2 further units will gain an A-level qualification. These units are:

Design & Making Practice--Major Project (coursework)

Design & Manufacture-- Written Paper (exam)
