BTEC First Diploma/Certificate Public Services at Cromwell Community College

Course description

With more than five million employees, the public sector is the UK's largest employer. It includes the armed forces, the emergency services, educational establishments and a host of public corporations. Covering so many different areas, this sector demands a broad range of skills and qualifications. This course is designed to provide a broad introduction to working in the sector and offers opportunities for accessing further study, such as a BTEC National qualification or an appropriate NVQ.

Edexcel BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Public Services

This course is the equivalent of up to four GCSEs at Grades A*-C. If you do not complete sufficient units you can achieve an Extended Certificate (equivalent to 2 GCSEs) or a Certificate (equivalent to 1 GCSE).

Edexcel BTEC First Extended Certificate in Public Services

This course is the equivalent of up to 2 GCSEs at Grades A*-C. You might complete more units and therefore gain the First Diploma which is equivalent to 4 GCSEs.

First Extended Certificate Course Overview

How will I Learn?

You will learn by doing classroom based activities and learning, visits to relevant organisations, visits by specialists from relevant organisations and practical lessons (Sports Hall based) BTEC FIRST EXTENDED CERTIFICATE IN PUBLIC SERVICES 136 Some aspects of the course will involve delivery out of school e.g. orienteering, map reading and navigation. 

How will I Learn?

You will learn by doing classroom based activities and learning, visits to relevant organisations, visits by specialists from relevant organisations and practical lessons (Sports Hall based) BTEC LEVEL 2 DIPLOMA IN PUBLIC SERVICES 107 Some aspects of the course will involve delivery out of school e.g. orienteering, map reading and navigation.

Assessment

How will I be Assessed?

Assignments are set throughout the year (with time deadlines for completion). Each assignment is given a grade; Pass, Merit or Distinction and these will all contribute to your overall final grade.

Will there be Independent Study?

This is a vital part of the course. You are expected to take responsibility for your own learning--developing skills of independence and maturity which are needed in the workplace. Independent Study will be expected on a weekly basis.

What do I need for the First Extended Certificate in Public Services?

College will provide all printed resources and published material. You will be expected to keep notes and research information from outside organisations when necessary.

Where does the Course Lead?

The BTEC First Diploma in Public Services can be a stepping stone for towards initial employment as, for example, a police community support officer, an army soldier or a Royal Air Force airman/woman. It can also lead to BTEC National Programme, or BTEC Higher National.
